Vape cartridges are small, but their packaging often isn’t. A typical cart ships in a printed box with a plastic clamshell inside, a PET window on the front and a glossy plastic laminate over everything. That’s a lot of plastic for a one-gram product.
The good news is that almost every part of that pack has a paper-based alternative that still protects the cartridge and still looks premium. This guide walks through the materials, inserts and finishes we use for eco-friendly vape cartridge packaging, how to keep it child-resistant, and which green claims you can safely print.
What makes vape cartridge packaging eco-friendly?
Eco-friendly vape cartridge packaging is packaging that uses less material, more recycled or responsibly sourced fiber, and as little plastic as possible, so the box can go in a normal paper recycling bin once the cart is removed.
In practice, that means four changes:
- Recycled or certified paperboard instead of virgin board.
- Paper inserts instead of plastic clamshells or foam.
- Water-based coatings instead of plastic film lamination.
- Right-sizing so the box isn’t bigger than it needs to be.
A box that does all four is usually curbside-recyclable with paper, which is the single biggest sustainability win available to a vape brand. It is also the starting point for every eco spec we build for custom vape boxes.
Best eco-friendly materials for vape cartridge boxes

| Material | Recycled content | Best for | Trade-off |
| Recycled kraft paperboard | Often high; ask your supplier for the exact percentage | Natural, minimal branding on retail carton boxes | Brown base mutes bright colors unless white ink is printed first |
| Recycled board (CCNB) | Recycled fiber with a white coated face | Full-color retail boxes on a budget | Grey back and slightly softer print than SBS |
| FSC-certified SBS | Usually virgin, from certified forests | Brands that need crisp, bright print | Not recycled content, so the claim is “responsibly sourced” rather than “recycled” |
| Recycled corrugated (E-flute) | Typically high | Multi-cart packs, displays and shipping | Bulkier than a folding carton |
| Molded fiber (pulp) | Recycled or plant fiber | Inserts and trays | Matte, textured look; fewer print options |
For most single-cartridge retail boxes we recommend recycled kraft or recycled CCNB at 16–18 pt. Both protect a 0.5 g or 1 g cart well, print cleanly and keep the box fully paper-based. You can see how these come together in our vape cartridge boxes.
Replace plastic inserts and windows

The insert is where most vape packs hide their plastic. Here are the swaps we make most often:
- Plastic clamshell → die-cut paperboard cradle. A folded paperboard insert with a cart-shaped cutout holds the cartridge just as firmly and recycles with the box.
- Foam → molded pulp or paperboard partitions. Pulp trays cushion glass carts well and look natural.
- PET window → a die-cut opening or no window. A small cutout still shows the oil, and an open window keeps the whole box mono-material. If you need a clear window, choose one that is easy to tear out, and tell customers to remove it before recycling.
- Plastic hang tab → paperboard hang tab built into the dieline.
The principle is simple: the fewer different materials in a box, the easier it is to recycle.
Eco-friendly printing and finishes

Finishes are where many “eco” boxes quietly fail.
| Choose this | Instead of this | Why |
| Aqueous (water-based) coating | Plastic film lamination | Coatings break down in paper recycling; film laminates can complicate it |
| Soy- or vegetable-based inks | Petroleum-based inks | Lower-VOC inks are a common sustainability choice |
| Embossing or debossing | Heavy metallic foil on large areas | Texture adds premium feel with no extra material |
| Small foil accents | Full foil panels | A foil logo is fine; large foil areas add material |
| Minimal, smart artwork on kraft | Full ink coverage | Less ink, and kraft carries an eco look on its own |
If you love the feel of soft-touch, ask your supplier for a soft-touch aqueous coating rather than a soft-touch film. It gives a similar velvety feel without the plastic layer.
Can eco-friendly vape packaging be child-resistant?

Yes. Child resistance comes from the mechanism, not the material, so a paperboard box can be child-resistant if its locking structure passes testing.
The common paper-based options are:
- Paperboard press-and-slide boxes, where a locked drawer only opens when both sides are pressed.
- Locking tray-and-sleeve cartons with tabs that need two separate actions to release.
- A standard recycled carton plus a child-resistant exit bag at the point of sale, where your state allows it.
Whatever you choose, child-resistant packaging is tested against the protocol in 16 CFR 1700.20. Ask your supplier for the test report on the exact paperboard style you buy. Our child-resistant boxes include paper-based styles. Note too that many states ban cannabis packaging that appeals to children, which matters for eco artwork as much as any other.
Which green claims can you print on the box?

This is the part most brands get wrong. In the US, environmental marketing claims fall under the FTC’s Green Guides, and they are stricter than most people expect.
According to a Proskauer summary of the Green Guides:
- An unqualified “recyclable” claim is only allowed if the entire package is recyclable, apart from minor incidental parts.
- Recycling facilities must be available to a substantial majority of consumers, meaning at least 60 percent.
- If only part of the pack is recyclable, the claim must say which part, clearly and prominently.
What that means for vape packaging:
| Claim | Safe to print when… |
| “Recyclable box” | The box is all paper (no film laminate or fixed plastic window) and you are only claiming the box, not the cartridge |
| “Made with X% recycled content” | Your supplier can document the percentage |
| “FSC certified” with the FSC logo | Your supplier holds FSC chain-of-custody certification and approves the label |
| “Remove window before recycling” | You use a tear-out window |
| “Eco-friendly” on its own | Avoid. Vague, unqualified claims are the riskiest kind |
State rules are moving too. Seven states, Maine, Oregon, Colorado, California, Minnesota, Maryland and Washington, now have packaging extended producer responsibility (EPR) laws, according to Faegre Drinker. These laws make brands help fund recycling for the packaging they sell, and they generally reward simpler, recyclable packaging. California’s SB 343, which limits use of the chasing-arrows symbol, is currently blocked by a federal court injunction, per the same source, but it shows where labeling rules are heading.
Tell customers how to dispose of the cartridge

The box is only half the story. Vape hardware, and especially disposables with built-in lithium batteries, should not go in household trash or recycling. The EPA advises taking e-cigarettes to a household hazardous waste collection site, because lithium batteries damaged in trash compactors can start fires in trucks and recycling facilities.
An eco-friendly pack makes this easy for the customer. Use a panel of your box for two short lines:
- “Recycle this box with paper.”
- “Take the cartridge or device to a household hazardous waste site. Do not put it in the trash or recycling.”
If you sell all-in-one devices, this matters even more; see our disposable vape boxes for panel space options.
Does eco-friendly vape packaging cost more?
Often less than people expect. Recycled kraft and CCNB board are standard stocks, and dropping the plastic clamshell, PET window and film laminate removes several components and production steps. Where costs can rise is with specialty materials such as molded pulp, hemp paper or certified stocks with limited availability.
To keep costs down:
- Standardize one cartridge box size across strains and change only the print.
- Use a paperboard cradle instead of a separate insert where you can.
- Order full runs of best sellers rather than several small reorders.
How to order eco-friendly vape packaging wholesale in the USA
- Send your cartridge specs: length, diameter and mouthpiece shape, or a sample cart.
- Choose the stock: recycled kraft, recycled CCNB, FSC SBS or recycled corrugated.
- Pick a paper insert and closure: cradle, partition or child-resistant paperboard style.
- Choose finishes: aqueous coating, soy-based inks and small foil or embossed accents.
- Check your claims: confirm recycled content and certifications before they go on the artwork.
- Approve a proof and a physical sample. Order packaging samples for a new structure.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most eco-friendly packaging for vape cartridges?
An all-paper box in recycled kraft or recycled board, with a die-cut paperboard insert, water-based coating and no plastic window. It protects the cart and recycles with paper.
Are kraft vape boxes recyclable?
Uncoated or aqueous-coated kraft boxes are widely recyclable with paper. Plastic film laminates and fixed plastic windows can make them harder to recycle.
Can recycled cardboard packaging be child-resistant?
Yes. Child resistance comes from a tested locking mechanism, such as a paperboard press-and-slide box, not from the material.
Can I print “recyclable” on my vape box?
Only if the whole box is recyclable and recycling is available to at least 60 percent of consumers. Claim the box, not the cartridge, and qualify the claim if any part isn’t recyclable.
How should customers dispose of vape cartridges?
The EPA advises taking e-cigarettes to a household hazardous waste site, not the household trash or recycling, because their lithium batteries can cause fires.
What is the minimum order for eco-friendly vape boxes?
CBD Boxes produces custom eco-friendly vape boxes from 100 units, with free shipping in the USA.
Make your vape packaging greener, one swap at a time
You don’t have to redesign everything at once. Start with the biggest wins: recycled paperboard, a paper insert and a water-based coating. Then add clear disposal instructions and only the claims you can back up. The result is a box that protects your cartridge, meets the rules and tells customers you take sustainability seriously.
