Custom Cigarette Box Design: Styles, Sizes & Printing Guide

Updated Oct 12, 2026 6 mins read

Few packages are handled as often as a cigarette box. It’s opened and closed many times a day, carried in pockets and bags, and has to keep its contents fresh and uncrushed the whole time. That makes cigarette packaging one of the most demanding small-box formats to get right structurally and legally.

Whether you run a tobacco, herbal-blend or pre-roll brand, or you’re a distributor ordering empty cigarette boxes wholesale, this guide covers what you need before you send artwork to print: box styles and their names, standard sizes, materials and finishes, how to create your own packaging design, and the compliance checks every order needs. At CBD Boxes, we produce custom packaging boxes for brands that need precision small-format printing, and this guide draws on that work.

What Is a Cigarette Box Called?

anatomy of flip top cigarette boxes

A cigarette box is most often called a pack or packet. The industry uses more specific names for each style:

  • Flip-top box (also hinge-lid pack or hard pack) a rigid paperboard box with a lid hinged at the back. It’s the most common style worldwide.
  • Soft pack a paper wrap around a foil inner, opened by tearing the top.
  • Slide (shell and drawer) box an inner tray slides out of an outer sleeve; used for premium and special editions.
  • Carton the larger outer box that usually holds 10 packs for retail and distribution.

Inside a flip-top box you’ll usually find an inner frame (the collar that holds the lid shut), a foil or metallized inner liner that keeps the contents fresh, and an outer overwrap film with a tear strip.

Materials and Finishes

  • SBS paperboard (around 230–300 gsm) the standard for flip-top boxes; bright white and prints sharply.
  • Kraft paperboard a natural look for herbal and eco-positioned brands.
  • Metallized or foil board a mirror base for metallic designs without foil stamping.
  • Inner liners foil or paper liners to keep contents fresh.
  • Finishes: matte or gloss lamination, soft-touch coating, foil stamping, embossing and spot UV. On a box this small, one finish on the logo looks premium; more gets cluttered.

How to Create Your Own Cigarette Box Design (6 Steps)

how to design a custom cigarette boxes in 6 steps
  1. Get the exact dieline. A flip-top box has many small panels, glue flaps and an inner frame. Design only on the dieline from your manufacturer, or start with our free cigarette box template.
  2. Reserve the regulated space first. Before you place any branding, block out the areas your market requires for health warnings and other mandatory text (see compliance below). Many markets set these zones by percentage of the panel.
  3. Design the front and lid. Logo, product name and one strong visual element. The lid edge is seen every time the pack opens, so it’s a good spot for a color band or pattern.
  4. Use the side panels. Put batch codes, barcodes and required text here. Keep them clear of fold lines.
  5. Set up print-ready files. Use CMYK (plus Pantone spot colors for exact brand colors), 300 dpi images and 3 mm bleed. Outline all fonts.
  6. Approve a proof and sample. Small panels hide mistakes. Check a 3D proof, then a physical sample, before the full run.

Using a cigarette box design maker? Online box design tools work well for mock-ups and quick concepts. For production, the final file still needs to sit on the manufacturer’s exact dieline.

Compliance: What to Check Before You Print

Cigarette and tobacco packaging is among the most regulated packaging in the world. The brand owner is responsible for compliance, but a good printer will ask about it. Examples of rules you may meet:

  • Health warnings are mandatory in most countries. Many specify size, position, wording and images. In the EU, combined text and picture warnings must cover 65% of the front and back of the pack.
  • Plain packaging laws in markets such as Australia, the UK, France and Canada ban logos, brand colors and finishes. Only the brand name is allowed, in a standard font on a standard drab color.
  • Pack format rules for example, the EU requires cigarette packs to be cuboid and hold at least 20 sticks.
  • No appeal to minors. Avoid cartoons, candy themes and youthful imagery in every market.
  • Tax stamps and tracking codes are often required, and need a reserved space on the pack.

Rules change and differ by country, state and product type: tobacco, herbal or other smoking products. Confirm current requirements with a regulatory adviser before you approve artwork.

 FAQs About Custom Cigarette Boxes

How can I make a DIY cigarette box?

Print a flip-top template on 250–300 gsm card. Cut along the solid lines and score the dashed fold lines with a ruler and a blunt edge. Fold the inner frame first and glue it in place, then fold and glue the outer body and lid. A DIY box works for a prototype or a one-off gift box. For retail, use professionally die-cut boxes so every pack folds identically.

How can I create my own packaging design?

Start from your manufacturer’s dieline. Set aside any legally required areas first, then place your logo, colors and text. Export a print-ready PDF in CMYK with 3 mm bleed. Free design tools are fine for concepts; our design team can prepare the final file for you.

Can I buy empty cigarette boxes wholesale?

Yes. We supply empty boxes printed with your design, or blank ones to label yourself. They ship flat or pre-glued, depending on how you pack.

Do you offer a custom cigarette box template?

Yes. Download our free templates for king size, slim and super slim flip-top boxes, or request a dieline sized to your product.

Can my box use any design I want?

Not always. Many countries require health warnings, and some require plain packaging. Confirm the rules for every market you sell in before you finalize artwork.
